Dakota Nations of Manitoba Flag

The Dakota Nation of Manitoba represents the five Dakota First Nations located within the province: Sioux Valley, Birdtail Sioux, Canupawakpa, Dakota Plains, and Dakota Tipi. Unlike many other First Nations in the region, the Dakota people in Manitoba were not original signatories to the numbered treaties, maintaining a unique historical and legal relationship with the Crown.

The flag reflects the deep ancestral roots, sovereignty, and distinct cultural identity of the Dakota Oyate in Manitoba. The central design prominently features sacred symbolism alongside the emblems of its member communities, anchored by the traditional white bison motif on a field of blue.

Today, the Dakota Nation of Manitoba continues to champion self-governance, economic growth, and the preservation of Dakota language and tradition while reinforcing their vital place in the region’s historical landscape.
