Superimposed on the boundary between these two colors, at the center of the flag, is the national coat of arms of Portugal. The national coat of arms, centrally placed, is a complex and historically significant emblem. It is primarily composed of two main elements:
An armillary sphere: This golden instrument, with its bands representing the celestial equator, ecliptic, and meridians, symbolizes Portugal’s glorious age of exploration and discovery, emphasizing its pioneering role in navigation and its global maritime empire.
The traditional Portuguese shield: This shield, superimposed on the armillary sphere, features seven golden castles on a red border, representing the fortified points conquered by the Portuguese during the Reconquista. Inside, on a white background, are five small blue shields, each bearing five white bezants (or circles) arranged in a cross shape. These small shields symbolize the five wounds of Christ and the Christian victories over the Moors.

The current flag was officially adopted on June 30, 1911, following the establishment of the Portuguese Republic.
