Description

Description

Treaty 3, also known as the Northwest Angle Treaty, was signed in 1873 and covered a vast region in northwestern Ontario and southeastern Manitoba. The treaty involved the Crown and the Anishinaabe Nation, facilitated by Commissioner Alexander Morris. It was crucial for establishing a transportation route to western Canada while securing resource-sharing agreements.

For the Anishinaabe, the treaty was a way to protect their traditional ways of life amidst colonial expansion, though many disputes arose over the Crown’s interpretation of land cession. Indigenous leaders viewed the agreement as a partnership to share the land.

Treaty 3’s legacy is pivotal in modern land claims and sovereignty negotiations, reflecting its ongoing relevance.

The design of the Treaty 3 flag  reflects deep cultural and historical symbolism tied to the Anishinaabeg people.
