Description
Description
Encompassing northern Alberta, northeastern British Columbia, and parts of Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories, Treaty 8 was signed in 1899. Negotiations involved the Crown and Cree, Dene, and Métis peoples. The treaty opened the area for resource extraction while ensuring Indigenous access to traditional practices.
Indigenous leaders saw the treaty as a means to secure their ways of life amidst colonial pressures, but conflicting interpretations of land cession have led to disputes.
Treaty 8 remains significant in discussions about natural resources and Indigenous sovereignty.
