Description
Description
Treaty 9, signed between 1905 and 1906, included northern Ontario and parts of Manitoba. The treaty involved the Crown and Cree and Ojibwe peoples. It aimed to formalize access to lands for resource development while promising Indigenous communities reserve lands and annuities.
Indigenous leaders saw the treaty as a way to coexist with settlers, though disputes over the interpretation of land sharing persist. Treaty 9’s legacy is central to debates about resource management and self-governance.
