On the eagle’s breast is another red shield with a white cross and four firesteels (or Cyrillic ‘C’s) in each quarter, facing the cross. This motif, known as the Serbian cross, represents the national motto: “Only Unity Saves the Serbs” (Samo Sloga Srbina Spašava). The shield is topped by a royal crown, signifying Serbia’s historical monarchy. The current flag was officially adopted on August 16, 2004, and its use reaffirmed in 2010.
