Description
Description
Signed in 1876, Treaty 6 covers central Saskatchewan and Alberta. The treaty involved the Crown and Cree, Assiniboine, and other First Nations. Unique to Treaty 6 was the inclusion of a “medicine chest” clause and famine relief provisions, reflecting Indigenous concerns about health and food security.
Indigenous signatories viewed the treaty as a mutual agreement to ensure their survival, while the Crown saw it as a way to secure land for settlers. Divergent interpretations of the treaty terms have caused lasting disputes.
Treaty 6 continues to be a cornerstone of Indigenous-Crown relations and discussions of sovereignty in the region.
