  • Superimposed on the armillary sphere is the traditional Portuguese shield. This shield contains two main elements:
    • Seven gold castles on a red border, representing the fortified strongholds conquered by Portugal during its expansion, particularly from the Moors.
    • Five blue escutcheons (shields), each containing five white bezants (dots or coins). These five shields commemorate the five Moorish kings defeated by Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, at the Battle of Ourique. The bezants are said to represent the five wounds of Christ, reflecting Portugal’s religious heritage.
